The Virginia basketball team made an announcement on Wednesday about a coaching adjustment that is sure to excite Cavaliers supporters. Kyle Guy, a former standout basketball player at Virginia, is making a return to the program. Guy will now be part of the coaching staff in the role of an Athlete Development Mentor/Special Assistant. Having played for Virginia from 2016 to 2019, Guy played a key role in leading the Cavaliers to a national championship in 2019. His return is seen as valuable support as the program continues its pursuit of further success.

“Kyle Guy, a former Virginia All-American, has been appointed as an Athlete Development Mentor/Special Assistant,” stated a report from Virginia basketball.

Following his triumph in winning the national championship in 2019, Kyle Guy departed the Virginia basketball program. Noteworthy achievements during his time with the Cavaliers include being named Final Four Most Outstanding Player, a Third-Team All-American, a two-time First-Team All-ACC selection, and winning ACC Tournament MVP in 2018. Guy’s impactful career with the team has led head coach Tony Bennett to eagerly welcome him back to the fold.

“We are delighted to have Kyle back in Charlottesville,” expressed Tony Bennett. “Kyle is not only one of the most exceptional players I’ve had the privilege of coaching, but he is also one of the most outstanding young men I’ve encountered. His immediate contributions to our program, working closely with our players and imparting the experience and competitive spirit he has gained through his collegiate and professional journey, will be invaluable.”

Upon concluding his time with Virginia, Guy transitioned to playing basketball professionally. He experienced stints in both the NBA and the G League with the Sacramento Kings and the Miami Heat, followed by a period overseas. However, he has now made the decision to return to Virginia.

“C’ville I am back!” exclaimed Guy. “I extend sincere gratitude to Coach Bennett and Carla Williams for entrusting me with the opportunity to return and embark on this new chapter in my life. While it was a tough decision, my deep affection for this culture and community made it clear where I needed to be with my family. I am incredibly excited to support the team and the University in any capacity required. I also look forward to instilling in my children the understanding that the pursuit of excellence is ongoing! Embrace the challenges!”

Kyle Guy: A Revered Figure in Virginia Basketball

For Virginia basketball enthusiasts, Kyle Guy will forever hold a special place due to his heroic contributions during the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers had entered the tournament in 2018 with high expectations as a number one seed, only to suffer a stunning defeat to 16th seed UMBC in the opening round, becoming the first top seed to succumb to a 16 seed.

Entering the 2019 NCAA Tournament seeking redemption from the previous year’s debacle, Virginia faced several precarious situations during their impressive run. In the Elite Eight against Purdue, a dramatic buzzer-beater was required to force overtime, but it was Guy who emerged as the hero during the Final Four clash against Auburn.

The showdown between Virginia and Auburn in the 2019 Final Four remains a memorable encounter, with Guy emerging as the savior for the Cavaliers. Trailing 61-57 with less than 10 seconds remaining, Guy buried a crucial three-point shot to narrow the gap to one. Subsequently, with Auburn leading 62-60, Guy was fouled while attempting a three-pointer with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock. Cool under pressure, he converted all three free throws to secure victory and propel Virginia to the national championship game, where they ultimately defeated Texas Tech in overtime.

Kyle Guy has earned adoration from Virginia basketball supporters, who are eagerly anticipating his return to the program in his new coaching capacity.
