The Golden State Valkyries have officially unveiled a roster for fans to analyze and discuss, having selected 11 out of a possible 12 players during the WNBA Expansion Draft. While no marquee names were chosen—since teams were allowed to protect six players—the new franchise still succeeded in gathering an intriguing mix of young talent and seasoned players.
It’s hardly surprising that the most notable picks, Kate Martin and Temi Fagbenle, both share ties to Indiana Fever star and anticipated 2024 Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark. Each athlete, however, boasts a commendable resume. Martin served as the linchpin for a distinguished Iowa Hawkeyes team that reached the national championship game in back-to-back seasons. Although she didn’t find her footing with the Las Vegas Aces, she has the potential to become the prominent figure for the Valkyries.
Fagbenle, a seasoned player making her return to the WNBA in 2024 after a four-year break, infused a vital defensive dynamic into the Fever’s lineup. Her experience will be invaluable as head coach Natalie Nakase asks her to take on a similar role in Golden State. Kayla Thornton, a locker room leader, will also join the team in the Bay Area soon after securing a championship with the New York Liberty. Her contagious energy is likely to resonate well in this new and challenging setting.
Fans have expressed their thoughts on these selections and the entirety of the Valkyries’ first-ever roster, available for viewing below. Given that expectations are typically moderated in an expansion draft, the overall sentiment seems to lean positive, if not cautiously hopeful.
Reactions to the Valkyries
“This Valkyries team is starting out strong. GM {Ohemaa} Nyanin is showing why she excels in her role,” Zena Keita shared on X. “Great three-point shooters such as {Veronica} Burton, Martin, and {Cecilia} Zandalasini. Plus, there’s great athleticism from {Monique} Billings, {Iliana} Rupert, and Fagbenle. Expect to see lots of threes, fast breaks, and aggressive defense. A fantastic beginning leading into free agency.”
Nakase emphasized the need for sharpshooters prior to the lineup announcement, a strategy that could hasten the Valkyries’ path to competitiveness if executed effectively. Having previously been part of the Aces’ coaching staff during two championship victories, she understands the challenges that lie ahead. Yet if she can foster a sense of unity in her athletes regarding her vision, the organization is likely to progress positively.
Many applauded both Nyanin and Nakase for the inventive approach taken in assembling this team. “The Valkyries’ initial roster presents a commendable blend of length, floor spacing, resilience, budget-friendliness, and defensive strength,” noted Alford Corriette from Her Hoop Stats. “I anticipate further maneuvers, but genuinely appreciate the front office’s innovative thinking.”
Those feeling disappointed or underwhelmed by the results of Friday’s draft were met with a reality check, which may serve fans of Toronto and Portland well when those teams engage in their own expansion drafts in the future. “People are claiming the Valkyries are in bad shape.. did you honestly think teams would leave their stars unprotected?” questioned an X user named Justice Collins rhetorically. “Who did you expect would actually be available?”
Golden State raises eyebrows with bold draft choices
While fans have much to say about the Valkyries, they are almost equally intrigued by the players who were left unselected. Management opted not to draft anyone from the Seattle Storm.
This decision comes on the heels of two-time champion and six-time All-Star Jewell Loyd’s trade request, which has been linked by many to a prior investigation regarding bullying and harassment (no violations were established). The Storm’s roster also features numerous unrestricted free agents, potentially complicating Golden State’s choices.
“The Valkyries indicated that the atmosphere on the Storm was not ideal .. they preferred to avoid those players,” claimed a Toronto sports fan known only as H.
Despite only having 11 players on the roster, the organization is providing its fans with plenty to chat about. Enthusiasm will remain high as the Golden State Valkyries prepare for free agency and their inaugural participation in the WNBA Draft in 2025.
