Tennis icon Serena Williams is enhancing her involvement in women’s sports by becoming part of the ownership group for the WNBA’s latest franchise, the Toronto Tempo. The team, which is set to launch in 2026, announced Williams’ participation on Wednesday.
Williams highlighted the significance of investing in female athletes, viewing her role with the Tempo as a chance to foster the league’s development.
“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes — I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity,” Williams stated, according to Kendra Andrews of ESPN. “I am excited to partner with Larry (Tanenbaum) and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”
Kilmer Sports Ventures, chaired by Tanenbaum, is the primary owner of the Tempo. Teresa Resch is the president of the team. As part of her involvement, Williams will assist with jersey design and collaborate on merchandise.
Tanenbaum lauded Williams’ contribution, recognizing her influence in the realms of sports and business.
“Serena Williams is an icon, a role model and a force for change in the world,” Tanenbaum remarked. “She has achieved her phenomenal success through hard work, tenacity, and determination despite numerous obstacles. She embodies the very best of what the Tempo represents — we couldn’t be more honored to have her on our team.”
Williams boasts a solid track record in sports investments, already owning stakes in the Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC, and the Los Angeles Golf Club.
The WNBA’s recent expansion includes three new teams, starting with the Golden State Valkyries making their debut in 2025, followed by the Tempo and an unnamed Portland franchise in 2026. Toronto has recently appointed former WNBA player Monica Wright Rogers as general manager. Wright Rogers, a two-time WNBA champion with the Minnesota Lynx, previously held the role of assistant GM for the Phoenix Mercury.
The Tempo will conduct their expansion draft after the conclusion of the 2025 WNBA season in preparation for their first campaign.
