This year, North Carolina Central men’s basketball mentor LeVelle Moton will be recognized with the 2024 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award on October 5th. This accolade acknowledges Moton’s extraordinary contributions both on the court and through his philanthropic endeavors.

LeVelle Moton’s path in HBCU basketball commenced as a distinguished player at NCCU during the 1990s. After moving from Assistant Coach to Head Coach, he became the 17th head coach in NCCU’s history and recently achieved a milestone as the all-time winningest coach for NCCU men’s basketball, securing his 252nd victory in December 2023.

Under his guidance, the Eagles made history with a third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2019, clinching the MEAC Tournament title and earning Moton the distinction of Most Outstanding Coach.

After his time at NCCU, Moton competed professionally in Indonesia and Israel for four years. Throughout his international stint, he averaged 25.0 points and more than five assists per game.

Moton’s impact reaches well beyond basketball. He is significantly engaged in community service through his “Velle Cares” Foundation, which supports initiatives such as back-to-school events, single mothers, and educators. Additionally, he co-established Raleigh Raised Development with local entrepreneurs to advocate for affordable housing initiatives. In 2022, Raleigh Raised Development initiated a collaborative project to rejuvenate the Heritage Park Community in Raleigh, considering resident feedback in the redevelopment strategies.

Recently, Moton received correspondence informing him of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. “We would like to let you know that your years of devoted service to this great nation have touched the lives of countless individuals. Your life’s work continues to be a powerful influence globally,” the message stated.

In reply, Moton conveyed his appreciation on his X account (previously known as Twitter), stating, “Look, Momma… Look. I am truly humbled and honored to receive The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. To God be the glory! To everyone—teachers and coaches—who has ever invested in me… Thank you!”

The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, created by former President George H. W. Bush as part of the Points of Light initiative, honors individuals who have made a profound impact through their service. The Premiere Coalition Partners Association, LLC oversees the program, ensuring compliance with the Points of Light standards. Awardees receive a lifetime pin, a gold medallion, and a letter signed by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

The event honoring Moton and other honorees will take place on October 5, 2024, at the North Carolina Central University Student Center in Durham County, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
