Everyone seems to aspire to have the prowess of Anthony Edwards, but few are eager to face five fines in a single season. The Minnesota Timberwolves’ standout is struggling to manage his emotions, and the league hasn’t hesitated to impose penalties.
The latest fine was incurred during a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. The incident unfolded while he was on the sidelines after being taken out with 2:25 remaining in the match. Edwards let his frustrations boil over and directed an obscene gesture towards a referee, leading to a significant penalty of $50,000.
“I made a careless, young, dumb mistake, shooting birds. That has nothing to do with the refs at all. That’s all me mentally making a dumb mistake. I won’t do it again. I ain’t getting no more techs, I ain’t saying nothing else,” Edwards reflected on Monday.

The NBA announced the fine on Monday, just prior to the Timberwolves’ 120-106 win against the Washington Wizards. In their official statement, the league confirmed that Edwards was penalized for making inappropriate gestures towards a game official. This recent penalty adds to his mounting total, bringing his season fines to $285,000. The league is evidently keeping a vigilant watch on his conduct.

Anthony Edwards Is Only Adding Up To His Fines
Anthony Edwards has been in the spotlight for all the wrong motives this NBA season. While he showcases impressive skills on the court, his off-court behavior has taken a toll on his finances. This most recent fine marks the fifth time he has faced penalties this season, accumulating over $285,000.

This latest penalty isn’t an isolated incident. He has faced fines for inappropriate language and postgame critiques of referees. The NBA is evidently documenting his behavior, with the severity of penalties increasing for repeated offenses. Just last month, he was fined $100,000 for using foul language during a live interview, along with an additional $75,000 for publicly denouncing officials in a vulgar manner, and $25,000 for similar comments made in a press conference.
Earlier in the season, he drew a $35,000 fine for making an obscene gesture during a game. Fortunately for Edwards, financially, he can absorb these hits without much struggle, given his substantial $42.2 million contract. Nevertheless, these fines signify more than mere monetary losses; they reflect an urgent need for him to mature both on and off the court. If he aspires to be recognized among the league’s elite, he must find ways to channel his intense competitive spirit constructively.
