The Indiana Fever have made a significant move regarding Kelsey Mitchell, aiming to surround Caitlin Clark with top-tier talent.
Chloe Peterson, a reporter for the Indy Star, reported Thursday that the team has successfully retained Mitchell. This allows them to offer her a supermax salary of $249,000 per season while also securing exclusive negotiating rights.
“This core offer to Mitchell has long been anticipated by the Fever, who aim to preserve the backcourt partnership of Mitchell and Caitlin Clark for at least the near term,” Peterson noted.
“Together, Mitchell and Clark formed one of the most effective backcourt duos in the league during 2024, each averaging 19.3 points per game — with Clark outscoring Mitchell by three points overall in the regular season.”
Mitchell just wrapped up her seventh season in the WNBA, accumulating an average of 16.8 points and 2.8 assists over her career thus far.
Expectations for the Fever with Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell in 2025
The 2025 WNBA season is set to be pivotal for the scoring pair of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell.
They propelled the Fever to the 2024 playoffs, finishing the regular season with a 20-20 record after overcoming a shaky start of 3-10 in the first 13 games. Although their campaign ended with a first-round defeat to the Connecticut Sun in a best-of-3 series, the team’s resilience amidst challenges left room for optimism.
Looking ahead, the Fever will need to adapt without Christie Sides, who was dismissed following the season. Stephanie White has taken over as coach, and she faces considerable expectations as she aims to optimize the synergy between Clark and Mitchell.
Clark is gearing up for a promising sophomore season, looking to build on the achievements from her impressive rookie year. She not only broke multiple records for the Fever but also for the WNBA, earning the league’s Rookie of the Year title and later being recognized as Time’s Athlete of the Year.
For Mitchell, the goal will be to have another standout season after being named an All-Star and finishing 10th in the MVP voting.
