Duke Basketball newcomer Cooper Flagg, the anticipated 2025 NBA Draft top pick, appears poised to emerge as one of the premier players in collegiate basketball. Recently, Flagg received guidance from a Duke icon who possesses valuable insights into the situation Flagg finds himself in as a prospective standout for the Blue Devils.

In a recent interaction, Flagg had the chance to converse with former Duke standout and current head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick, and shared insights from that discussion in a segment on “The Brotherhood Podcast” hosted by Flagg’s Duke colleague and second-year guard, Caleb Foster.

“JJ Redick spoke with the team, emphasizing the external scrutiny we will face this season and the need to tune it out,” Flagg remarked. “He specifically pointed out that I’ll likely bear the brunt of it, which is par for the course.”

“So, I believe that being able to adjust to that and absorb it all, that kind of advice was truly beneficial to hear,” Flagg added.

If there’s anyone well-versed in ignoring distractions, it’s Redick. Throughout his tenure at Duke, Redick stood out as the most reviled college basketball player in the nation and constantly contended with rowdy crowds at away games and heightened media attention. Despite these challenges, Redick managed to excel. For Redick to specifically address Flagg and caution him about these circumstances underscores the high regard he holds for the aspiring freshman forward.

    Outlook for Cooper Flagg

Flagg is widely regarded as a once-in-a-generation talent. Following a remarkable high school career, Flagg recently made an impression as a member of the Team USA select squad, which sparred with the United States National Team ahead of the Olympics. Notably, Flagg held his ground against NBA icons like LeBron James and Anthony Davis, exhibiting tenacious defense and even sinking shots over the NBA All-Star adversaries.

Even at just 17 years old and a freshman, Flagg is poised to be a key figure and among the top performers for the 2024-25 Duke roster. Duke is already set for high aspirations, with ESPN’s recent “Way-Too-Early” top 25 ranking them as the 8th-ranked team in the nation. Flagg’s exceptional blend of defensive adaptability, comprehensive offensive skills, and elite athleticism will enable him to make an impact from the outset despite his youth and limited experience.
