The Indiana Fever made a significant move this offseason by signing Sophie Cunningham, a former player for the Phoenix Mercury. She expressed her enthusiasm about partnering with Caitlin Clark during a press conference on Tuesday.
“When we first played against her (Clark), I noticed she had a lot of pressure to handle,” Cunningham noted, according to Clark Wade. “It’s easy to make judgments and comments, but ultimately, we should support and uplift one another… She has accomplished so much, and along with that (2024) rookie class, they’ve raised a lot of awareness for our league, which is crucial. This is what we’ve always aimed for, so we should welcome them and ensure they succeed.”
“When I first faced them, I found myself saying, ‘hey, keep doing your thing… You’re doing an amazing job; reach out if you ever need anything.’ That’s not like me at all. Usually, I’m indifferent. And then during the All-Star game, we were just enjoying ourselves. While she was playing, I was having a blast on the sidelines. I ended up telling her… ‘hey, if you ever want to come to Phoenix, let me know.’ But that didn’t turn out how I expected; now I’m here, which is fantastic!”
Fever strengthen roster with veteran acquisition
Caitlin Clark emerged as a standout player in 2024, guiding the Fever to the playoffs and ultimately receiving the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year Award. Indiana undeniably has a promising future, having brought in several key players to complement the team led by Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell.
Sophie Cunningham is set to add valuable experience to the roster. Even though the Fever have a relatively young team overall, incorporating another veteran with WNBA experience should enhance their prospects significantly.
